HEADER AND FOOTER

The bar at the top, built like a page.

A header is rows of blocks, not a setting. Put the logo where you want it, add the icons you use, drop the ones you do not, and give a seasonal sale its own bar above the menu.

A header can follow the page down or sit still, carry a hairline or none, and stand on any surface the theme already has. Name neither and the store keeps the built-in bar and slab, which is what every shop starts with.

What goes in a header
  • Logo or wordmark
  • A menu's links
  • Search
  • Account
  • Cart
  • Wishlist
  • Free text — a phone number, opening hours
  • One link, plain or as a button
  • Fixed space
What goes in a footer
  • Logo or wordmark
  • Column headings
  • A menu's links, stacked
  • A tagline, an address, the small print
  • One link
  • A picture — payment marks, an award
  • A hairline divider
  • Fixed space
Shared, not copied

A header belongs to the shop, not to one theme. Two designs can wear the same bar, and swapping a theme does not rebuild it.

The bar itself
  • Follows the page down, or does not
  • A hairline under it, or none
  • Which surface it sits on
  • How tall it is
